MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - Lance Cpl. Harry Lew's platoon leader described the 21 year old as a "below average Marine" who wasn't "mentally tough."

1st Lt. Jameson Payne said Lew fell asleep four times while on guard duty in Afghanistan.

He committed suicide on April 3.

Lance Cpl. Jacob Jacoby and Lance Cpl. Carlos Orozco allegedly punched and kicked Lew as punishment and forced him to do pushups.

Marine Sgt. Benjamin Johns is charged with failing to protect Lew.

The Marine Corps is also trying to determine if the actions of Jacoby, Orozco and Johns amounts to hazing.

The Marine Corps said it doesn't tolerate any form of hazing.

The Article 32 Hearing will determine if they will face court martial or if the charges should be dismissed or handled administratively.
