MANOA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Three Hawaii Pacific University students who were stranded overnight on Manoa Falls Trail were rescued Tuesday morning.
According to officials, a 23-year-old female and two 22-year-old males alerted authorites via cell phone around 6:20 p.m. Monday.
Honolulu Fire Department crews made contact with the group and attempted to airlift them out Monday but darkness fell, so they suspended air operations until Tuesday morning. Firefighters told the trio to stay together and not to move around during the night until crews could return in the morning.
The hikers said they had no food or water, and only planned to be out hiking for 1.5 hours. They said they got lost off the trail while trying to follow the trail markers down from the hike.
HFD rescue crews resumed their efforts Tuesday morning and airlifted each hiker out in a sling by 7:15 a.m.
HFD firefighters gave the hikers food, water and blankets. No major injuries were reported.
