HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Senator Dan Akaka received a piece of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Sunday.

The black granite was presented during a ceremony at the Korean-Vietnam Memorial on the grounds of the State Capitol.

Senator Akaka says it was tough for Vietnam veterans to get public support even after the war ended.

"The Vietnam veterans, really, and this is me, really didn't get the attention that they needed and warranted", said Senator Akaka.

Akaka was honored for his efforts while he was chair of the Senate subcommittee on National Parks.

More than 16,000 people from Hawaii served in the military during the Vietnam War.
