Hawaii schools dominate Pac-West honors

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Pacific West Conference has announced its preseason PacWest rankings and the All-PacWest Team.

HPU was well represented with Kyra Pelayo being named the Preseason Libero of the Year, Natasha Bell being named to the team, and HPU being picked to finish fourth.

Pelayo was the regular season Libero of the Year in 2010, and was selected by the coaches to repeat in her senior season. Also an All-American in 2010, Pelayo set the school record for digs in a season with 598, averaging 6.72 per set, ranking her 3rd in the country. Entering 2011, Pelayo is 164 digs short of the HPU career record.

Bell, also a senior, was named to the All- PacWest 2nd team in 2010. She played and started in all 24 matches, posting 256 kills, 281 digs and 30 aces.

Despite the fact HPU finished third in the PacWest a year ago, returns five starters, and features six seniors, HPU was picked to finish fourth in the conference by the coaches.

HPU opens the season Friday against Alaska Anchorage at St. Andrews' Priory at 7:00 pm, HPU will then turn around and host Alaska Fairbanks at 1:00 pm on Saturday.
