No tsunami threat to Hawaii after Japan earthquake

TOKYO, Japan (HawaiiNewsNow) - A strong earthquake hit early this morning near Japan's eastern coast, but it was not strong enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The quake was measured at a magnitude 5.9, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake happened at 1:23.m. Hawaii time.

It was centered off the coast of Ibaraki, about 140 miles east of Tokyo, at a depth of 20 miles.
