Okudara had stash of weapons inside Kahului home

KAHULUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui police found three semi-automatic rifles, a revolver, and ammunition in the Kahului home at the center of a 50-hour standoff. Suspect Josiah Okudara wasn't the only person taken into custody during the ordeal.

According to police, 18-year-old Erath Kaihewalu lives in the home on Opukea Street where the standoff happened. When authorities arrived on Wednesday, police said Okudara was with his girlfriend and young son. Kaihewalu and another woman were also inside the home. The two women and the boy voluntarily left that night.

"A 22-year-old Kahului resident and a 23-year-old Hana resident were arrested for hindering prosecution. Both were subsequently released pending further investigation," said Lt. Wayne Ibarra of the Maui Police Department.

Kaihewalu surrendered after police shot tear gas into the home on Thursday.

"He was arrested and charged for hindering prosecution. His bail was set at $1,000. He subsequently posted bail," Ibarra said.

Okudara was wanted on outstanding warrants for two counts of attempted murder and promoting dangerous drugs in the second degree.

Police wanted to be patience since gun shots were heard three different times during the standoff.

"We had to assume that he was heavily fortified and we cannot underestimate the type of weaponry that he had. We had to expect a situation of that magnitude," Ibarra said.

Okudara is set to appear in court on Monday for the two indictment warrants. Additional charges may be pending.
