HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii's endangered monk seals could be getting a new hospital just for them.
The California-based Marine Mammal Center is in the middle of a fundraising effort to build a facility to treat sick or injured monk seals on the Big Island.
The center has raised about $700,000, but needs over $1 million before it can break ground in Kailua-Kona.
The plans include tanks for raising seal pups.
About 1,200 Hawaiian monk seals remain in the wild.
