Happy Aloha Friday! We made it to the weekend and it's a special edition of Sunrise today.
The United Public Worker's union holds a final vote on whether to authorize a strike. Union members including trash collectors and airport cleaning crew are unhappy about a new contract that calls for a 5-percent pay cut, plus a 50-50 share of health benefits. If the strike gets the green light, timing could be critical. Just before President Obama and other world leaders arrive for the APEC conference.
President Obama will give an update on the debt debate with the deadline to reach a deal now just days away.
Hawaii Five-O fans will like this. Waikiki's Royal Hawaiian Center is opening "Five-O Bar & Lounge" today.
WHAT'S TRENDING AT 6:10
What movie really gets the water works going? Scientists pinpoint the saddest movie of all time. That's just one of our trending topics this morning.
THE GOOD, THE BAD, & THE WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? AT 6:40
Who are the "Sunrise Girls" and why did they make the list? Plus, where does the Mankini motorcyclist land? Find out when we make our picks of the week for the "Good, Bad, & What Were They Thinking?"
FIELD TRIP TO GEEK SQUAD SUMMER SCHOOL AT 7:40
Geek Squad recently held a Summer school for young children who wouldn't get exposure to computer learning otherwise. On this week's field trip, see how Steve and I crashed their course and made heads turn, and NOT in a good way.
'EAT THE STREET' GARLIC COMES TO SUNRISE AT 8:10
We can almost smell the garlic. Eat the Street sets up on the sidewalk right outside our station to preview "Eat the Street".
FOOD FILLED FRIDAY: A BET'S A BET!
Dan Cooke is a man of his word. He lost his Women's World Cup to Taizo when Japan beat the U.S. So this morning, we're all winners-- as a sushi chef sets up his bar in our newsroom. (Too bad I'm pregnant... Otherwise, I'd be dining in style this morning!)
MY MATERNITY LEAVE STARTS MONDAY
And, speaking of my baby status, I'll sign off this morning to get ready to welcome my daughter, but wait till you hear who will be sitting in for me while I'm gone. Here's a hint. The Men of Sunrise are losing me for a couple of months, but they're gaining four new "TV wives." Yes, I'm referring to the "Sunrise Girls."
Hope you can join us this morning and thanks for being part of our Sunrise family!
Aloha & A hui hou,
