HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - More Honolulu police officers will soon be armed with taser guns, thanks to a $25,000 donation from the Honolulu Police Community Foundation.
Former police chief Lee Donohue presented the check from the foundation Thursday. The money covers the cost of 17 electric guns, each equipped with a video camera to record incidents.
The department now has more than 600 tasers in its arsenal, including 77 donated by HPCF.
"As a former chief, I realize some of the budget constraints that the chief is going through right now and how hard it is to get equipment because of the economy and the budget problems that they have," Donohue said.
HPD says its officers deployed the weapons 68 times in 2010, and that no one was seriously injured.
