KAHALUU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Firefighters battled a fire at a building in Kahaluu Monday night.
According to officials, the blaze broke out at Nursery Associates on Pulama Road, above the Kahaluu Regional Park.
The first call came in just before 9:40 p.m.
About 35 firefighters responded and had the flames under control by 10:15 p.m.
Officials say they faced some challenges due to the rural area. Crews also had to cut the lock off a gate to gain access.
When crews got there, the building was fully engulfed.
"Typically a nursery will have some fertilizers, pesticides, but the caretaker told us those supplies were kept in a building across the drive from where the fire was, so we're fortunate, that none of those products were involved. Or it doesn't appear that there was any involvement from any chemicals," HFD Capt. Terry Seelig said.
Firefighters were able to prevent the flames from spreading to any of the other nearby buildings.
The one person who lives in the building was home at the time, but escaped without injuries.
Damages are estimated at $300,000.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
