The show will run from July 21st-23rd, 2011, Thursday, Friday and Saturday for a total of four performances. Three consecutive evening performances will commence at 7:00 PM and one Saturday matinee at 2:00 PM.
Performers will include 57 students island-wide who are participating in the Ohana Arts Summer Musical Theater Workshop, ages 8-18.
Take the wild ride through a violent twister with Dorothy Gale and Toto as they spin their way from Kansas to a magical and frightening land over the rainbow, and meet some of our classic, beloved characters, the Scarecrow, the Tim Man, the Cowardly Lion, witches good and wicked, and a variety of creatures that can only be found in the land of Oz. This Royal Shakespeare Company production includes spectacular sets and costumes as well as rich, dressed up orchestrations reminiscent of the movie. All the favorite tunes, including "Somewhere over the Rainbow" will be heard, as well as the addition of "The Jitterbug," an impressive dance number, which was eliminated from the movie.
Ohana Arts was founded in January 2010 by Hawaii born sisters, Jennifer Taira, pianist and clarinetist, and Carolyn Taira, director of the Hongwanji Mission School Performing Theater. Both having degrees in their respective fields on the mainland, Jennifer and Carolyn realized the need for more exposure to the arts in Hawaii which would help foster and nurture the local talent, while building upon Hawaii's already rich culture. The first seven-week summer musical theater workshop, complete with intensive training in acting, dance, and singing with high caliber instructors (both from Hawaii and from the mainland), took place in the summer of 2010. Student participation included 22 children islandwide who took part in a culminating production of "Mulan, Junior," in addition to their voice lessons, acting coachings, and dance instruction. This summer, Ohana Arts is pleased to announce that their student participation has almost tripled with more than 57 children and teens participating in the musical theater workshop, and this year's production of, "The Wizard of Oz." Jennifer and Carolyn Taira are joined by choreographer Liz Piccoli, who has danced with the Metropolitan Opera and Chicago Lyric Opera, and voice instructor, Laurie Rubin who has performed with New York City Opera and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. This year, a large production team is on board, including a full stage crew and internship program with high school and college aged individuals who are learning from professional mentors in costume, set, and make-up design.
