HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A fatal accident on the H-2 freeway shut down all lanes coming from central Oahu early Monday morning.
The accident was reported at about 4:30 a.m.
According to HPD Lt. David Nilsen, a 58-year-old Wahiawa man operating a Hyundai SUV was heading north bound in a south bound lane of the H-2 freeway near the Pineapple Road overpass when he crashed into a Toyota SUV.
The man operating the Hyundai SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as Timothy Leyes.
The driver of the Toyota SUV, a 47-year-old Waialua woman, was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
The third vehicle, a Honda sedan, attempted to avoid the collision and hit the center median. The driver of that vehicle, a 44-year-old Waianae woman, was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
All lanes of the H-2 freeway heading south bound from Wahiawa, Mililani and the North Shore were closed for about four hours, backing up traffic during morning rush hour.
Kamehameha Highway through Kipapa Gulch was also closed in both directions for a portion of the morning, but was later reopened.
It is unknown at this time if speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
This is the 29th fatality this year, compared to 32 at this time last year.
