The St. Louis campus received a sleek, shiny new addition Thursday.
Crusaders past and present were in attendance for the dedication of the new basketball court at McCabe Gym.
The new floor will be known as "The Walter Wong Court," in honor of the longtime St. Louis basketball coach.
Considered one of the winningest coaches in the history of Hawaii basketball, Wong led the Crusaders to five state championships in his 25-year tenure.
"What we hope it means that people will be inspired by the memory of Walter Wong and what we are trying to do is bring that memory for the present basketball players and future basketball players," said Cliff Nakea, a former player under Coach Wong.
St. Louis' Executive Vice President of Development and Recruitment James "Duke" Aiona played on Coach Wong's last team.
"We lost in the state finals, but we won in the game of life because that's what Coach Wong taught us. He taught us about hard work, he taught us about responsibility and discipline, and the hard work was really what I learned from Coach Wong and have taken that in my career," said Aiona, a former Lt. Governor.
The court is just the first phase of a $300,000 fundraising effort to refurbish the entire gym.
