Washington D.C. (HawaiiNewsNow) - Congresswoman Mazie Hirono is stepping down from the Ethics Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Hawaii representative submitted her resignation letter to House Speaker John Boehner Thursday.
Hirono says she's stepping down because she does not want her candidacy for higher office to interfere with the work of the ethics committee.
Rep. Hirono in May announced her candidacy to succeed Sen. Daniel K. Akaka, who is retiring at the end of his term. Hirono will face former U.S. Rep. Ed Case in the Democratic primary.
In 2002 Hirono defeated Case in the Democratic primary for the 2002 governor's race. She later lost to Republican Linda Lingle.
