MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A popular and beloved kumu hula died early Wednesday morning on Maui.
Kumu Charles K. Kaupu Jr., chant teacher and performer, recently worked at the Old Lahaina Lu'au. He also worked in the late 1980's and 90's as a program director and on-air personality at KPOA 93.5 FM. He was known on air as the "Bushman."
Recently at the 34th Annual Na Hoku Hanohano Awards Kaupu chanted and played the Pahu for Raiatea Helm and Keola Beamer's performance.
Kaupu was a 1975 graduate of Kamehameha Schools. He was 53. Funeral services are pending.
