Kermadec Islands earthquake poses no threat for Hawaii

KERMADEC ISLANDS (HawaiiNewsNow) - The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 7.8 magnitude earthquake near the Kermadec Islands at 9:03 a.m. (HST).

The Kermadec Islands are located 570 miles south of Tonga.

According to the USGS, the earthquake was 29.8 miles deep.

According to the Department of Emergency Management, the earthquake poses no threat to Hawaii.

The DEM says coastal areas in Hawaii could experience small non-destructive changes in sea level or unusual currents at about 4 p.m., and may last several hours.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has cancelled the tsunami warning for the Kermadec Islands, Tonga and New Zealand.
