HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An inmate at the Oahu Community Correctional Center tried to escape the premises Tuesday morning.
According to officials, Edson Tarry was meeting with a social worker shortly before 9 a.m. when he climbed a pipe to get to the roof of a building.
"Once on the roof, he was headed toward the fence line," Department of Public Safety Director Joe Booker said. "Upon getting close to the fence the tower officer fired a warning shot and the inmate stopped and he was captured and placed back into the housing."
Officials say OCCC was staffed appropriately at the time of the incident.
The 30 year old was awaiting trial for burglary. He has two prior convictions including assault and consuming liquor in a public place.
Now, Tarry will likely face an additional charge of attempted escape.
The Corrections Division is investigating the incident to determine if changes need to be made to prevent this from happening again, and to make sure the prison guard followed proper procedure.
