Firefighters put out Kohala brush fire

KOHALA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii County firefighters responded to a brush fire in Kohala Monday afternoon.

According to officials, the fire was reported at 2:19 p.m. in a dry brush area near Old Puako Beach Road across from Beach 69.

When firefighters arrived to the scene, they found approximately one-quarter to half-an-acre of brush on fire.

Officials say the main head of the fire was heading in the east, north-east direction.

One acre of brush was damaged in the fire. The flames were extinguished at about 3:50 p.m.

According to investigators, the cause of the fire was likely due to fireworks.

During the mop-up, a fireworks-like substance was discovered approximately three feet from the roadway.

Evidence was collected by police.
