Kalanianaole Highway reopens after fatal crash

HAWAII KAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -  Honolulu Police have reopened Kalanianaole Highway in the area of Sea Life Park after a fatal crash involving a moped and a SUV.

The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Elizar Acorda of Kahuku.  According to police, Acorda was with a group of friends riding moped's to Sandy Beach when a SUV heading to Waimanalo, crossed the center line, hitting Acorda's moped.

Friends riding with Acorda tell Hawaii News Now all six moped's had to swerve to get out of the way.

One moped rider lost control and fell to the ground; he was taken to the hospital in good condition with broken bones.  Witnesses claim the driver of the SUV was speeding.

The crash happened around 11:55 a.m.

Honolulu police closed Kalanianaole Highway until 3 p.m. in the area of Sea Life Park and Makai Pier in Waimanalo.

All south bound traffic from Waimanalo were turned back at the Makai Pier. All north bound traffic from Hawaii Kai will be turned back at the Makapuu Lookout.

Honolulu Police are looking into whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
