Holiday booze ban begins at sandbar

KAILUA (HawaiiNewsNow) – Officers from the Department of Land and Natural Resources are now enforcing new rules on the Kaneohe sand bar.

The new rules prohibit the possession and/or use of alcohol at the sandbar for the three day Fourth of July weekend and this year's three day Labor Day weekend.

Holiday celebrations at the sand bar have gotten out of control in recent years. Hundreds of people flock to the sand bar to soak in the sun and suck up the suds. Binge drinking had led to fights and one of those fights recently left a man dead.

Violators will be faced with fines up to five-thousand dollars.
