PEARL CITY (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Pearl City community hopes a new roadway will help alleviate traffic congestion in the Manana area.
A dedication ceremony and opening for Kaakepa Street was held on Wednesday. In attendance was Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle, City Councilmember Breene Harimoto and the Pearl City Community Association.
Kaakepa, which means "take a short cut," connects Kuala and Kuahaka Streets.
"Kaakepa Street is roughly one quarter of a mile long, but its benefit to this community will go on and on by improving the quality of life for residents," Carlisle said.
The $3.5 million project included construction of the roadway, curbs and gutters, sidewalks, a storm drainage system, traffic signals, street lighting, an irrigation system and trees to beautify the street.
The new roadway is one of the planned infrastructure improvements in support of the Manana and Pearl City Junction Development.
