Big Island police warn public of modeling scam

HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) - Police in Hilo are warning the public about an online scam that lures unsuspecting females to Oahu for a career in modeling.

According to officials, two young local women recently traveled to Oahu in response to the advertisements.

After several days of being photographed on Oahu, the two women learned that the photographer and "modeling agent" planned to take them out of the state and possibly the country.

One of the females managed to fly back to the Big Island. She believed the pair's true intention was to traffic the young women into a life of prostitution.

Honolulu police were notified and managed to intercept the second female and the two suspects as they were checking out of their hotel.

The second woman was safely transported back to the Big Island.

Officials are urging the public to be aware of potential threats on the internet, especially if making personal contact with individuals met online.
