HPD cracking down on distracted driving

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu police conducted a specialized enforcement over the weekend in Pearl City and Kalihi.

On Saturday, law enforcement officers issued 232 citations -- 109 citations for unlawful cell phone use and 50 citations for seatbelt violations.

According to officials, studies show that drivers who use a handheld device while driving are four times more likely to be involved in a vehicle crash.

HPD says they will continue the enforcements to emphasize the importance of complying with these laws.
