WAIAWA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Police are asking the public's help in capturing four inmates wanted for escaping from the Waiawa Correctional Facility sometime late Saturday or early Sunday.

The men were discovered missing when guards did a routine head count.

"At about 11:40 last night, they did an initial bed check and all four were accounted for," said Honolulu Police Sgt. Kim Buffett of CrimeStoppers. "At about 1:10 a.m., they went in and re-counted, and four males were found missing."

Waiawa is a minimum security facility. Buffett said it's believed the four may have walked away from the facility, as there were no signs of a break out. She said the four were roommates who were housed in the same cubicle.

"SSD (HPD's Specialized Services Division) was called out at approximately 3 a.m.," said Buffett. "They did an extensive search of the area, and the males were not located."

The road leading to the facility and Mililani Memorial Park was shut down Sunday morning as officers searched the area and checked departing vehicles for any sign of the four inmates.

"Being in a minimum security facility, they're probably up for parole soon," Buffett said. "With this escape, they're looking at longer terms."

Escape carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison.

Buffett said even though they were in a minimum-security facility, they should still be considered dangerous. There is a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

Anyone with information is being asked to call Honolulu CrimeStoppers at 955-8300, or *CRIME on your cellular phone. The public can also send anonymous text and web tips by texting "CS808" plus a message to 274637 or CRIMES.
