HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Long live the Queen! On Saturday, Kaimuki theater buffs polished up a Waialae landmark on the 75th anniversary of the Queen Theater. The group, Friends of the Queen Theater, invited everyone to join the celebration by cleaning up the area near the top of the hill on Waialae.
It's part of an ongoing restoration effort to save the 850 seat theater, which hasn't been used in two decades. After the demolition of the Varsity Theater on University Avenue a few years ago, this is the only historic theater in the area.
Nancy Wilcox, a member of Friends of Queen Theater, said, "We didn't want this to be another Varsity Theater. We didn't want to see it go. A lot of us just stood by and didn't do anything for the Varsity so we knew we had to at least form a group to try to bring some focus on this."
For years, the building's owner has been fighting off corporate offers. The restoration project is still in its research and planning phase. The organizers are hoping to start performances again, but no decision will be made without consulting with the Kaimuki community.
