HPD warns public of scam, fraud cases targeting elderly

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - With a significant increase seen in scams and fraud cases targeting the elderly, the public is being reminded to be careful when it comes to forking over hard-earned money.

At a news conference on Friday, Honolulu police, the Prosecutor's Office and the Better Business Bureau teamed up to offer tips to residents, as well as highlight the spike in elderly abuse crimes.

So far this year, there has been a 100-percent increase in the amount of crimes being reported as compared to last year.

In response, the prosecutor's office has added staff to combat the problem.

"They overwhelm seniors with their fast deliveries, they confuse the seniors by talking in technical terms, and at the end of the day they can probably get a sale out of the senior because the senior has respect for authority and respect for technical expertise," said Dwight Kealoha, BBB Hawaii.

The Prosecutor's Office is warning criminals that it will prosecute those trying to scam the elderly out of their hard-earned money.
