HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Jake Shields is looking for a comeback and it could feature a link to the 808-State. The UFC middleweight told Hawaii News Now on Thursday that a match against Hilo native BJ Penn is one he's "hoping for the most."
Shields (26-5-1) said Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck are other names he's interested in as possible opponents.
Shields last fight came at UFC 129 where he lost to George St. Pierre by unanimous decision, a fight that snapped Shields 15-match win streak. The only way to work back up, he admitted, is to defeat another formidable foe.
"It'd be an awesome fight. I mean I like BJ Penn. I got a lot of respect for him. But it's a fight that I'd love out of respect...because I want to fight the top guys. Nothing personal between us but I know we're two of the best and it would be a great fight," said Shields.
"I lost that really close fight to George St. Pierre and I want to get another shot and…BJ and Fitch are two top contenders right now, so I want to knock one of them off and get another shot."
Penn (16-7-2) last fought Fitch at UFC 127, which resulted in a draw. That was February 27, 2011.
Shields is one of several UFC fighters who are in Oahu this week to promote the Big Boys & MMA Hawaii expo at the Blaisdell Center Friday-Sunday.
