Bail for suspected serial arsonist set at $1 million

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man accused of deliberately setting multiple fires in the Tantalus and Makiki areas is scheduled to appear before a judge at Honolulu District Court Thursday.

Police on Wednesday charged Thomas Chong, 45, with first-degree attempted arson and second-degree arson in his latest case. His bail is set at $1 million.

Investigators say Chong set five fires in a Tantalus neighborhood at 4 AM on May 20th. Maunalaha Street resident Hennessey Brown says his home surveillance cameras caught the suspect in the act.

Chong's bail is set relatively high because he already has a pending arson case.

The suspect was previously charged with setting multiple fires at an apartment building on Wilder Avenue May 10th. He was released from custody after he posted the $100,000 bail in that case.
