HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Duke's Waikiki is honoring Uncle Val Ching with the restaurant's Ho'okahiko Award. The award celebrates individuals who have dedicated their lives to perpetuating the Hawaiian culture.
Previous recipients of the award include Sig Zane, Jo-Ann Kahanamoku, Kau'i Brandt, and Sam and Fred Kamaka.
Uncle Val is known for making and surfing paipo boards. He is also knowledgeable on other Hawaiian arts such as farming kalo and making kapa and ipu wai.
