MAUNA KEA (HawaiiNewsNow) - The first large telescope ever built on Hawaii's Mauna Kea Volcano has been knocked out by lightning.

The University of Hawaii's 2.2 meter telescope has been out since early June after tens of thousands of lightning flashes were recorded around the state.

Engineers are currently working to bring the 41-year-old telescope back online.

Repairs could have the device back up within a day.
