Firefighter upgraded to stable condition after falling through roof

KALIHI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Honolulu firefighter is in stable condition after responding to a Kalihi building fire Monday night.

According to officials, the call came in just before 10 p.m. at 2023 Republican Street.

When firefighters arrived to the scene, they discovered there was no fire. Crews soon determined that the smoke was coming from a malfunctioning oven in the warehouse.

As crews continued their investigation on the roof, firefighter Dwayne Lee, 43, stepped on a fiberglass panel that gave way. He then fell approximately 30 feet below.

Lee was transported to the Queen's Medical Center in serious condition, but was later upgraded to stable condition.

According to officials, Lee has been in the department for 20 years. He's been a Fire Captain for nearly eight years and was working with Quint 31 from the Kalihi Kai Fire Station.

This is the second firefighter injured this year. The first incident occurred on June 3 in Haleiwa when firefighter Kamaki Worthington was nearly electrocuted.
