Man identified in fatal crash near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Kea'au man who died in a vehicle crash near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park early Sunday morning has been identified.

According to officials, 20-year-old Bryson Areola was driving on Highway 11 near milespot 35 at around 1:30 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the lava field.

The passenger in the vehicle, 19-year-old Julien Quiocho of Hilo, was flown to the Queen's Medical Center in critical condition with head and spinal injuries.

Officials believe speed and alcohol were factors in the accident.
