Hyatt workers authorize boycott against hotel

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Workers at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki have voted to authorize a boycott against the hotel. By an 89% margin, union hotel workers voted in favor Wednesday of the consumer boycott of the hotel.

The contract for more than 500 unionized workers at the property originally expired in June of last year. Since then, workers have staged several public protests against the hotel.

Wednesday's vote represents the first time in five years that Local 5 members have organized towards a boycott.

Union workers say they're fighting to keep their jobs and force the hotel to provide safe working conditions for employees.

Management says the boycott has already begun, claiming the union has contacted wholesalers advising them not to send visitors to the Hyatt because there could be work disruptions. Management adds business has already been affected.
