Union boycott vote underway

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - UnitedHere! Local 5 union workers at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa are expected to authorize a boycott of the Oahu property on Wednesday.

Members started casting votes outside the Hyatt on Kalakaua Avenue at 6 am. Voting ends at 6 p.m., with results announced around 6:30 p.m.

Union leadership expects a strong "yes" vote that will result in workers picketing the property and openly discouraging visitors and locals from patronizing the Hyatt.

This is the first time in five years that Local 5, which represents about 500 workers at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki, has worked to boycott a major Oahu hotel.

Hyatt Local 5 workers has been without a contract for about a year. It's seeking to end outsourcing and subcontracting work to non-union workers and wants improved safety conditions for its workers.

We'll have more on this story tonight on Hawaii News Now beginning at 5 p.m.
