KAAAWA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Jonathan Fontes, 28, has been in a "persistent vegetative state" since January. Police believe he was involved in a physical altercation and are seeking those responsible for his injuries.

According to family Fontes went to a party in Kaaawa on Saturday January 29th, 2011. He came home the next day with ringing in his ear and scrapes and bruises indicating he had been in a fight. He did not have a clear memory of how he was hurt.

Fontes' family took him to Castle Medical Center and on January 31st he fell into a coma. He has not regained consciousness. Now his parents and police are asking for witnesses who can help explain what happened.

"It's been hard on the family and we need closure. Some of the siblings and other family members really need to get some closure. We need to find out who did this. We need people to step up to the plate to have a conscience and say what happened," said Lori Gomes, Fontes' mother.

"This is a criminal case. This is an assault first right now, and if he was to pass, it would change to a murder," added Kim Buffett, CrimeStoppers Honolulu coordinator.

Police told Hawaii News Now they have questioned nearly 30 people who were at the party. They say there were multiple fights at the party that night, but investigators got very few answers about how Fontes was injured.
