$101K settlement for Big Island veterinary center

HONOLULU (AP) - A Big Island veterinary clinic is to pay $101,000 to settle a federal sexual harassment lawsuit.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced in a news release Tuesday East Hawaii Veterinary Center in Hilo has entered into a consent decree agreeing to revise its policies and compliant procedures to address sexual harassment, discrimination and retaliation, along with other measures.

According to the lawsuit a clinic co-owner subjected eight female employees, including receptionists and a veterinarian, to harassment since at least 2005.

The agency says the co-owner made unwelcome sexual, disparaging and hostile comments about women.

An attorney for the center says in a statement the company denied the allegations and is committed to providing employees with a good work environment.

The center treats small, avian and exotic animals.
