HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - More than a thousand people waited in line at an L&L Hawaiian BBQ on Tuesday in hopes of purchasing a cheap lunch.

From 10 a.m. to noon, the L&L Hawaiian BBQ in the Keeaumoku Walmart sold plate lunches for just 76 cents to celebrate their opening in 1976.

Three types of plate lunches were available for purchase including chicken katsu, kalua pig and hamburger steak.

Drinks were also available for purchase for 10 cents.

The eatery began the annual special back in 2006.

Rod Nakamatsu has been the first customer in line for the past four years. This year, he waited in line at about midnight.

"I got a [free] Pepsi, but I also got a T-shirt and the discount on the plate lunch," Nakamatsu said. "While we were waiting outside, they gave free breakfast and coffee to the first 20 people. So all together, I got a $30 value for less than a dollar."

The eatery says more than 1,400 plate lunches were sold.

Proceeds from the event will go to Goodwill Hawaii.
