HFD responds to Waialua garage fire

WAIALUA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A downed power line caused a garage fire in Waialua Friday morning.

According to officials, the down wires lit the brush around the garage located on Kamehameha Highway and Pohakuloa Way.

"Shortly after we got here, maybe about 15 minutes to 20 minutes around there, one of the home owners said that there was smoke coming from their garage," HFD Capt. Terry Seelig said. "We investigated and found the back of the garage had fire growing in it."

During an attempt to extinguish the flames, an HFD firefighter Manavaroa Worthington, 40, was injured.

"While fighting that fire, controlling that fire, a firefighter was injured by electricity, so we not sure of the exact circumstances that caused the injury," Seelig said. "The firefighter has been transferred in stable condition to a hospital."

The fire was contained in the garage. Motorcycles, a van and SUV were destroyed in the fire.

Total damages are estimated at $210,000.
