Big Island bus riders must pay beginning July 1

HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) - Beginning next month Hele-On bus riders will have to pay for transportation.

The Hawaii County Council voted Wednesday to implement a one-dollar fee per one-way trip.

The vote puts an end to more than six years of free island-wide transportation.

The bill still needs to be signed by Mayor Billy Kenoi, or allow it to become law without his signature.

Children under five, students, the disabled and those above 55 will ride for free.

Discounts are available for by purchasing a book of 10 tickets for $7.50, or an unlimited monthly pass for $30.

According to the Mass Transit Agency, the new fares are expected to bring in $560,000 for the county.
