HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man accused of killing his adoptive mother at their home in Kalihi last month kept his newly-shaven head lowered throughout his arraignment at Circuit Court Thursday.

Charlie Hernane, 27, who sported shoulder-length locks at the time of his arrest, did not speak during the brief hearing. Deputy public defender Craig Nagamine entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

The defendant is charged with second-degree murder. A family member discovered his mother, Teresita Hernane, 56, in her bedroom with a laceration to her head. Police say a kitchen knife was found next to the body.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office is waiting for additional test results before drawing a conclusion on the exact cause of death. The victim reportedly had health problems.

Charlie Hernane was originally scheduled to be arraigned May 26th. That hearing was postponed after the attorney representing him at the time expressed concern over his mental state and whether he understood the proceedings.

The defendant remains in custody, unable to post $100,000 bail. Trial is tentatively set for August.
