Hawaii Red Cross urging public to prepare for hurricane season

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - June 1 marks the beginning of hurricane season. The Hawaii Red Cross is encouraging the public to prepare for a major disaster in three main steps.

Assemble a disaster supplies kit

Have emergency supplies put aside for all household members for five to seven days. The kit should include emergency medications, non-perishable food, a non-electric can opener, bottled water (one gallon per person, per day), a battery-powered radio, flashlight with extra batteries and special items for infants, pets and elderly or disabled family members.

Prepare an evacuation plan

Identify two places of evacuation (one within your neighborhood, and one outside your neighborhood). Obtain a map with the community's inundation zones. Make advance preparations for pets and people with special needs. Be sure to listen to the radio for Civil Defense announcements.

Be informed

Create a plan for communicating with family members. The information will help you reunite with household members in the event of an emergency. The contact information can be stored on an emergency car and be placed in a wallet.
