Defense Secretary Gates visits Pearl Harbor

HONOLULU (AP) - U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is visiting the Battleship Missouri Memorial at Pearl Harbor.

Gates was expected to make brief remarks at the memorial Tuesday before traveling to Singapore to attend the annual Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia's most prominent security conference.

Items on the agenda for the Singapore meeting include discussion about the challenge of Afghanistan, the implications of China's military buildup and the dangers of North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

Gates' visit to Singapore will be his final overseas trip as secretary of defense before he's scheduled to quit June 30, a little more than 4 1/2 years after he entered as the successor to Donald H. Rumsfeld.

Gates is the only secretary of defense in U.S. history to continue serving in the same post under a newly elected president.
