MAKAWAO (HawaiiNewsNow) - More than 300 veterans, family and friends paid tribute to one of the Valley Isle's most honored native sons at Monday's Maui County Memorial Day Service in Makawao.

Maui-born war hero Army Private First Class Anthony Kahoohanhano posthumously received the Medal of Honor at the White House earlier this month, which was displayed during Monday morning's event.

Congresswoman Mazie Hirono presented the Kahoohanohano family with an American flag recently flown above the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, DC in honor of Kahoohanohano.

He was killed in action during the Korean War after he single-handedly took on a wave of enemy soldiers in order to buy time for his men to take a more secure defensive position.
