Public gathers at Honolulu Hale to sew lei for Memorial Day

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Community members gathered at Honolulu Hale Courtyard on Friday to sew lei for the upcoming Mayor's Memorial Day Ceremony at Punchbowl Cemetery.

The event was hosted by the Mayor's Office of Culture and Arts and is the first of many planned gatherings for the public to socialize and network.

The Department of Parks and Recreation used the event to help collect fresh flower and ti leaf lei.

The goal is to collect more than 50,000 lei to honor fallen heroes. Those lei will be placed on each veteran's grave marker at Punchbowl and other cemeteries throughout the state.

According to the Department of Parks and Recreation, 25,000 lei are still needed.

Anyone interested in donating lei may drop them off from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Punchbowl Cemetery, or from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday.
