Limited hunting permitted at PTA this weekend

POHAKULOA TRAINING AREA (HawaiiNewsNow) - A collaborative agreement between the Army and State Department of Forestry has permitted limited hunting activities at the Pohakuloa Training Area over Memorial Day weekend.

The Army will designate hunting for mammals in training areas 17, 19, 20 and the northern section of area 22 as "acceptable risk" from May 27 to 30.

Due to federal environmental mandates, these areas will not be available for future hunting.

"The goal is to continue to reach out to hunters one last time despite the heightened Force Protection Condition levels," said Lt. Col. Rolland Niles, commander, PTA.

At the end of June, the Army is also looking to permit hunting in the northwest Ke'amuku area.

For more information, call the PTA Hunter's hotline at (808) 969-3474.
