NTSB releases preliminary report in Kauai light aircraft crash

KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report is out on May 17 light aircraft crash off Kauai.

According to federal investigators, witnesses heard a loud pop before the crash near Hanalei.

According to the report, the aircraft operated by Kauai Aero Sport crashed into the ocean about 50 minutes after taking off from Port Allen Airport.

Pilot Steve Sprague and passenger Ray Foreman died.

The NTSB says weather conditions were clear and a flight plan had not been filed.

Investigators continue to inspect the wreckage to find out what caused the crash.

The investigation could take up to a year to complete.
