'Complete Our Street' to provide safer streets for community

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Community members in Honolulu want to make Waialae Avenue a safer environment for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists.

The "Complete Our Streets" sign waving and rally will take place this Friday at Kaimuki Park (10th Avenue and Waialae Avenue) from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The City & County Department of Transportation Services has been exploring bicycle accommodations on Waialae Avenue, however, it was not included in the currently planned re-paving and re-striping.

"I've heard 'I'm afraid to ride a bicycle in Honolulu' too many times. It's important to create safe and comfortable streets that provide transportation choices that are healthy and sustainable," said Daniel Alexander, organizer.

In accordance to Act 54, the "Complete Streets" law was adopted in 2009 to mandate "State and County transportation agencies to reasonably accommodate convenient access and mobility for all types of users."
