Honolulu city councilwoman to run for Congress

HONOLULU (AP) - A Honolulu city councilwoman says she's running for a U.S. House seat.

Tulsi Gabbard announced Thursday her candidacy for Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District to replace U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono who is running for Senate.

The 63-year-old Hirono wants to succeed U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, who at 86 years old is retiring when his term ends.

Gabbard was elected to the state Legislature in 2002 and has also worked as a legislative aide to Akaka.

In 2004 she deployed to Iraq with the Hawaii National Guard's 29th Brigade Combat Team, where she served in the medical unit.

She deployed to the Middle East a second time to assist in training the Kuwait National Guard.

The 30-year-old Gabbard is the first to enter the race to replace Hirono.
