Weird Science - Milk of Magnesia Magic

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Dr. V explains how Milk of Magnesia helps with an upset stomach.

Dr. V Show:  Milk of Magnesia Magic

Things you will need:

  • Milk of Magnesia
  • pH indicator – cabbage juice indicator will work
  • Vinegar – diluted acetic acid
  • Stir plate and magnetic bar

The Experiment:

Place 150 mL of water and 100 mL of Milk of Magnesia in a 500 mL beaker. Then add about 10 mL of your universal indicator or cabbage juice. Use the stir plate to start stirring your solution, or you could stir it by hand with a spoon. Once you add the pH indicator, your solution should be slightly blue, which indicates that your solution is slightly basic from the Mg(OH)2, magnesium hydroxide in the Milk of Magnesium. While stirring the solution, add a little bit of vinegar and watch what happens to your solution. Do you see the color change? Now keep stirring. You should see your solution turn back to the original light blue color. You can keep adding small amount of vinegar to your solution and the Milk of Magnesia will keep working until it's all used up.

How does it work?

The vinegar, or dilute solution of acetic acid, turns your solution slightly acidic, causing your indicator to change colors. The Milk of Magnesia is slowly dissolving into your solution, and as it does, it brings your solution back to basic, and turning your solution back to it's original color. This experiment explains how Milk of Magnesia works in your stomach to keep it from getting too acidic. When your stomach gets too acidic, sometimes from the food you eat, you may get heartburn or indigestion. When you drink Milk of Magnesia, it helps to neutralize any acid that it comes into contact with, making sure your stomach does not get too acidic. Please do not drink Milk of Magnesia without the consent and supervision of an adult.

Trump has already rejected the idea of bringing in the FBI to reopen its background check of Kavanaugh. Should he order such a review, it would likely delay a confirmation vote until after the election.
