Elderly man dies following Waipahu hit-and-run

WAIPAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An 86-year-old man is dead following a hit-and-run pedestrian accident that occurred early Monday morning on Farrington Highway.

According to police, the incident happened at 2:30 a.m. The 86 year old was walking on Awamoku Street in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by a vehicle. Officials say the man just got off of work from Waikiki.

The driver, believed to be operating a dark-colored or black Dodge pickup truck, fled the scene.

The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition where he later died.

"It is very dangerous. A lot of people are rushing in cars, a lot of people crossing the streets without crosswalks trying to catch a bus," Waipahu resident Al Somera said. "I've seen a lot of near misses and it's not very nice to see."

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Honolulu Police Traffic Division at (808) 529-3499.
